(Simple Stitches and the Basics)

Hello!

Here are some basic stitches to learn with easy instructions. These stitches will take your pattern level to another world! If you are still learning how to crochet then this is a place to improve and learn more skills. Check out How to Crochet if you do not already know.

Chain Stitches

This is the base of anything crochet, seriously. you need to know this. - by Lieutenant Loop.

START WITH EITHER A SLIPKNOT OR ONE LOOP ON THE HOOK.

  1. yarn over

  2. pull through next loop

  3. STEP THREE? THERE ISN'T ANY STEP THREE!

Slip Stitch

A stitch mainly used to attach and connect

WHEN YOU START, THERE SHOULD BE ONE LOOP ON THE HOOK

  1. Insert you hook into a stitch or chain.

  2. Yarn over and pull through the two loops on your hook

  3. That's it!

Single crochet

A great stitch that is used in lots of patterns.

WHEN YOU START, THERE SHOULD BE ONE LOOP ON THE HOOK.

  1. insert the hook into the chain loop

  2. yarn over

  3. pull through 1 loop

  4. yarn over

  5. pull through last 2 loops

  6. repeat!

Increase

A stitch used to make things larger

WHEN YOU START, YOU SHOULD HAVE ONE LOOP ON THE HOOK'

Here, you could do any stitch, but right now, we'll use single crochet

All you do is you do two of any stitch in the same chain or stitch


Decrease

To decrease the number of stitches

WHEN YOU START, YOU SHOULD HAVE ONE LOOP ON THE HOOK

Look at your next two stitches. insert your hook into the next stitch, and then into the next. You should have three loops on the hook.

Yarn over, and pull though the first loop on your hook.

Yarn over and pull through the last two loops.

Double Crochet

A step up to a world of more complex patterns

WHEN YOU START, THERE SHOULD BE ONE LOOP ON THE HOOK.

  1. Yarn over

  2. Insert hook into stitch

  3. Yarn over, and pull through first loop

  4. Yarn over, and pull through two loops

  5. Yarn over, pull last two loops over.

  6. Repeat!

Half-Double Crochet

A staple for anyone who loves patterns by Lieutenant Loop.

WHEN YOU START, THERE SHOULD BE ONE LOOP ON THE HOOK.

  1. yarn over

  2. insert the hook into the chain loop

  3. yarn over

  4. pull through 1 loop

  5. yarn over

  6. pull through last 3 loops

  7. repeat!

Treble Stitch

A long stitch

WHEN YOU START YOU SHOULD HAVE ONE LOOP ON THE HOOK

  1. Yarn over two times

  1. Insert your hook into the next chain or stitch

  2. Yarn over, and pull up a loop.

  3. Yarn over and pull through the first two loops.

  4. Yarn over and pull through the last two loops!

You're done!

Two Single Crochets Together

A more complicated decrease

WHEN YOU START YOU SHOULD HAVE ONE LOOP ON THE HOOK

insert your hook into the next stitch. Yarn over, pull through the first loop on the hook

You now have two loops on the hook. insert your hook into the next stitch. Yarn over, pull through the first loop.

You have two loops on your hook. Yarn over, pull through your last two loops.

I Cord Stitch

A flexible, useful stitch

WHEN YOU START YOU SHOULD HAVE ONE LOOP ON THE HOOK AND THREE CHAIN STITCHES

To start out your I cord stitches:

Insert your hook into the second chain stitch

Yarn Over and pull through the first loop

Insert your hook into the third stitch

Yarn Over and pull through the first loop

START HERE TO MAKE AN I CORD ON TOP OF ANOTHER I CORD! - Put the top two loops over the hook (these are called empty stitches. Do not pull on your crocheted piece too much or else the empty stitches will be unraveled)

Very carefully, Yarn Over and pull through the first loop

Insert your hook into the first empty stitch

Yarn Over and pull through the first loop

Insert your hook into the second empty stitch

Yarn Over and pull through the first loop
