Delightful Dolphin

Free Crochet Pattern

Try out this pattern by Wonderwool! This adorable dolphin ornament makes a perfect gift. Using only two colors of yarn, create a delightful decoration following the simple instructions below. Let's get crocheting!

MATERIALS NEEDED:

  • Blue yarn

  • Pink yarn

  • Safety eyes

  • 4.0 mm crochet hook

  • Hot glue gun

  • Pink marker

  • stuffing

ABBREVIATIONS:

  • ch (chain stitch)

  • sc (single crochet)

  • inc (increase)

  • dec (decrease)

  • slst (slipstitch)

FOR THE BODY:

  • R1 - make 4 ch

  • R2 - crochet all sc. Now, crochet all sc on THE OTHER SIDE of the ch. This should form an oval. From now on, your rounds should go all the way around the oval.

  • R3 and R4 - all sc

  • R5 - make 4 inc, and then the rest all sc

  • R6 - make 5 inc, and then the rest all sc

  • R7 - make 1 inc, and then the rest all sc

  • R8 - alternate between sc and inc

  • R9 through R12 - all sc

  • Insert your safety eyes into the dolphin. (See images below)

  • R13 and R14 - use this stitch pattern for all of the stitches above the bottom of the dolphin: sc, sc, sc, dec. sc, sc, sc, dec...and on. For the belly stitches - all sc

  • R15 - all sc

  • R16 - use this stitch pattern for all of the stitches above the bottom of the dolphin: sc, sc, sc, dec. sc, sc, sc, dec... and on. For the belly stitches - all sc

  • R17 - all sc

  • R18 - use this stitch pattern for all of the stitches above the bottom of the dolphin: sc, sc, dec. sc, sc, dec... and on. For the belly stitches - all sc

  • R19 - all sc

  • R20 and R21 - alternate between sc and dec

  • Stuff your dolphin.

  • R22 - make 3 dec

  • Seal the hold with a row of slst

  • Tie off your yarn

FOR THE FLUKE:

  • R1 - make 16 ch

  • R2 - all sc

  • R3 - alternate between sc and dec

  • R4 - all sc

  • Tie off your yarn

  • cut a short piece of yarn, and tie it around the middle of the piece. Cut off the extra string.

  • Crochet the fluke onto the dolphin body using slst

FOR THE DORSAL FIN:

  • R1 - make 5 ch

  • R2 - all sc

  • R3 - all sc and then make 1 ch

  • R4 - all sc going ALL THE WAY AROUND the entire fin

  • tie off yarn

  • hot glue the dorsal fin onto the dolphin

FOR THE FLIPPERS:

  • R1 - crochet 5 ch

  • R2 - all sc

  • R3 - all sc, and then make 1 ch

  • R4 - all sc ON THE OTHER SIDE of the first 5 ch

  • Make 1 dec and then 1 ch

  • Tie off your yarn

  • Repeat these steps to make the other flipper.

  • Hot glue the flippers on facing down so that the dolphin can hold the heart

FOR THE HEART:

  • R1 - make a MG with 6 sc in it

  • R2 - all inc

  • R3 - all sc

  • Tie off your yarn

  • Repeat these steps to make the other half of the top of the heart

  • Attach your hook to the side of one of the bumps.

  • Crochet the two bump's sides together using sc

  • R1 - crochet all sc around the outsides of the heart bumps

  • R2 - alternate between sc and dec

  • Stuff your heart

  • R3 and on - all dec until closed

  • Hot glue the heart on the dolphin in a way that makes it look like the dolphin is holding the heart with its flippers.

FINISHING TOUCHES:

  • Take your pink marker and draw rosy cheeks under the eyes.

  • Tie a string to the top of the dolphin's head to make it an ornament.

  • Draw a smile on its beak with black marker.
